Common Questions & Helpful FAQs

Are learning disabilities genetic?

Researchers do not know all the possible causes of learning disabilities and written language disorders. But, there are internal factors that may cause a child to have learning disabilities. Genetic factors are internal factors that show several genes are associated with reading disabilities, or with susceptibilities to reading disabilities.

In fact, children who have a parent with a learning disability are more likely to develop a learning disability themselves.

What is the difference between having learning issues and having a learning disorder or disability?

Everyone’s brain works differently, and how everyone learns is different too! We all have our strengths and weaknesses, but it becomes more of a learning disability when it becomes a significant obstacle in the child’s academia. For example, one student may read slower than others, or another can learn a musical instrument quickly, versus another student who learns better visually.

Learning disabilities affect the ability to understand or use spoken or written language, do mathematical calculations, coordinate movements, or direct attention.

Does my child's reading or learning disabilities get impacted by vision?

Vision problems are not the cause of dyslexia or learning disabilities. As stated in a published statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Council on Children with Disabilities, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology: Vision problems can interfere with the learning process; however, vision problems are not the cause of primary dyslexia or learning disabilities. Because vision problems do not cause dyslexia or learning disabilities, treating LD or dyslexia through eye exercises, behavioral vision therapy, or special tinted filters or lenses won’t help.

Does a learning disability mean that my child is less intelligent?

No! When your child has a learning disability, it only means that your child processes information differently than their classmates and may need accommodations to help them master subjects in school. Celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Whoopi Gohlberg, and Steven Spielberg prove that learning disabilities do not hinder development, learning, or talent!

Can you help with reading comprehension?

Yes, our speech-language pathologists can help with reading comprehension! We can work with your child on learning to read and understanding and remembering what they read. Comprehension is essential for children to learn, as it helps them to continue developing academic skills. Speech-language pathologists will teach your child strategies to cultivate comprehension – such as re-reading passages, taking notes, and reviewing the information they read.

I have been so very impressed by the providers at this establishment. My daughter is completely nonverbal and is nine years old and can have some behaviors that are hard to deal with. The two speech therapist we work with here continue to surprise me with their ingenuity. Every session they come prepared with multiple activities already planned out. We have seen speech therapist in downtown Seattle and driven hours to see speech specialists. I am so happy to have fabulist speech therapist so close to home. Elvina and Michael are amazing! The continuity of care has exceeded my expectations.

I really value what they do and as a Mother and sister of two family members who needed services I can say it has completely changed our family. Rock is very friendly, professional, clean, and welcoming. I would highly recommend them – even if you just ‘wonder’ if they can help, it’s worth it to make the call!

I can’t say enough good things about Rock Therapeutic Services. My 3-year old daughter has some speech delays. Trying to get a toddler to focus is hard but Adrienne is so patient and gets down to her level to interact and play games with her while they work on her speech. Our daughter is so happy and looks forward to her appointments. All the staff that work there are so friendly. I would highly recommend!
